Interview

What's your name? Describe yourself in one sentence.
Kerry Lee-Crawford - The woman who LOVES to share, create and grow.

Who did you make this quiet book for? How old are they?
I made this book twice at the same time for my twin step-daughters for their 7th Birthday in August 2015.

What's your level of sewing experience?
Advanced, I am actually a textile artist and have sewn since I was a child. I have my Visual Arts diploma, major in Textiles from the Alberta College of Art and Design, and I also have a BA in Art Education.

How long did it take you?
These books took me a few months, and I didn't work steady at them. I began in June 2015 and worked on them at my own pace. No idea how many hours....many, many days though.

Did you use any templates? Where can they be found?
For some of my pages I used other templates, like the Armour of God and I took the idea of the missionary tie and created my own patterns from what I saw. Other pages I created myself by finding LDS clip art or by looking at primary lesson pages to get ideas for the Repentance and Priesthood pages. I sketched everything else out first, then I went to work. I found many of my clip art online from various places.

How did you bind your quiet book?
I wanted to have a stable and well sewn book that would last a long time. I created each page on its own, then I sewed pages to each other leaving the left side open. I used pinking sheer scissors to trim around the sewn pages. I then used a colour strip of fabric to sew both set of pages together leaving a wide enough space to be sewn down the middle of the spine. I just like the look and feel of it. I explain this more in detail on my blog.

What material are the pages made out of?
Each page is made of either denim or upholstery fabric. I wanted each page to be thicker than just regular fabric, so it would hold up as the girls turned the pages. I could have used interfacing on the back of fabric, but I had a lot of denim and upholstery fabric and I wanted to get rid of it. Waste not, want not.

What other materials did you use?
I LOVE my fine tipped black fabric pen. It was very versatile and saved me lots of time and headaches. I also used fabric, applique fusible webbing, freezer paper, yarn, snaps, and velcro...oh...and let's not forget real pink blush, yup...you read right! (for the cheeks!!)

How much did all the supplies cost you?
I already had much of my supplies in my studio. I think I only had to buy the snaps and yarn...maybe $20??

What's your favourite page? Why?
There are so many that I like, but I'm really impressed how the girl head with brown hair turned out. I found a silhouette picture of a girl online and used it as the base. I wanted it to look like a beautiful girl and so I added my special touches with my fabric pen and cheek blush, as well as the lace collar and pretty button for the broach. I wanted real thick hair too, so I doubled the yarn. Needless to say....it's the girls' favourite page too!!! I have to remind them there are other pages as well!

Kerry has a post on her blog, Quiet Book - Show & Tell, where she talks more in detail about each page and links to the templates she used. Check it out!

Kerry, thank you so much for sharing your fabulous and inspiring quiet book with us!

Amanda's Quiet Book

Today's quiet book comes from Amanda at My Cup Overflows. Her book is really well made and contains some particularly cool pages - I love "The Armor of God" page and the "I Spy" pages especially. I'm totally planning on including "The Armor of God" page in my bible quiet book, whenever I eventually make that in the future.

Interview

What's your name? Describe yourself in one sentence.
Amanda Johnson.  I am a stay-at-home wife, mother of three, and my heart's desire is to follow God wherever He leads me.

Who did you make this quiet book for? How old are they?

I made this for my son, Zechariah, who is four.

What's your level of sewing experience?
I wouldn't say I was professional at sewing, but I know my way around well enough. My mom started teaching me when I was a young girl as part of my home school curriculum. I've had years of playing around with a sewing machine.

How long did it take you?

Way too many hours! I spent the afternoons, during my sons nap time, every day for weeks. Each page would take me at least 3 hours, some of the more complex pages were much much longer. I worked on it for 2 months.

Did you use any templates? Where can they be found?

My inspiration came from  "How to Make a Quiet Book." There are so many great ideas and pages there!

I used this Laura Thoughts - Put on the Armour of God Template for the Armor of God page.

I love the mail box and letters on this page: Leafy Treetop Spot - Quiet Book Love Letters.

My season page idea came from here Serving Pink Lemonade - Quiet Book.

I don't remember where my barn page came from. I did use a template for it. I know there are a lot of them out there.

How did you bind your quiet book?

I bought a pair of eyelet pliers to use for the binding. I had never used them before, but they made it so simple.  They were definitely worth the money I spent on them. The cover I made came from this blog: Tidbits - How to Make a Quiet Book Cover.

What material are the pages made out of?
I did not use the traditional muslin. I found it to be too flimsy for my taste. I believe what I ended up with is a heavy utility fabric.

What other materials did you use?
Lots of felt! Scrap material, a few yards of fusible interfacing, tons of snaps, ribbon, eyelets, beads, some Velcro, and buttons! I'm sure there's more that I'm forgetting.

How much did all the supplies cost you?
I think my total was between $50 or $60. I did buy some pliers with that, and I have lots of things left over. I probably could have made another quiet book with my leftover supplies.

What's your favorite page? Why?
My favorite page has got to be the I-Spy page. I had so much fun gathering items from around the house to include in the I-Spy pocket. I thought some of my items were too big, and it would be too easy, but they still have room to hide. Even my older kids will play with this page; it's everyone's favorite.
