Interview

What's your name? Describe yourself in one sentence.
Steph Bitter. I am a momma of 4 crazy kids ranging for 16 to 2; I love fabric, music, Montessori method, soccer games and require chocolate to stay sane!

Who did you make this quiet book for? How old are they?
This book was created for my 2 1/2 year old daughter who LOVES her quiet books and Christmas. This will go to church with us and sit on her Montessori shelves that we do for our “school” time.

What's your level of sewing experience?
This book is a basic sewing level…but I have decent sewing skills (thanks to 4-H and my mom!). The pattern gives several options to do things (like button holes) for those who aren’t comfortable with them.

How long did it take you?
Once I made the pattern the book took around 10 hours to make…I cut everything first and THEN carried it with me everywhere to work on while I waited for kids at their activities. I finished it in less than a week. I am very much a “start and finish” kind of gal and have made 60+ quiet book pages so I have lots of experience that probably helped make it go quick.

Did you use any templates? Where can they be found?
Yep, it can be found in my etsy shop: Simplycraftysisters.etsy.com
I wanted to create a book with LOTS of fine motor skills and that had a new approach to many favorite quiet book activities for my kiddo.

How did you bind your quiet book?
Grommets and binder rings. I want this book to last for the Grandkids, and my nice hubby sets them for me!

What material are the pages made out of?
Felt, minky, ribbon, fur, clear vinyl.

What other materials did you use?
Snaps, a comb, thread, dry erase marker, buckle, grommets.

How much did all the supplies cost you?
I have the kit available in my shop if you’re interested, with all supplies included for $35: Christmas Quiet Book Fabric Kit.

What's your favorite page? Why?
The Comb Santa’s Beard page….my daughter carried this around for days once it was finished. And truthfully, the idea was what inspired the book to start with. But, the fishing the house decorations out of Santa’s bag is a close second!

Steph's giveaway this week is her "Here Comes Santa Claus" Christmas Quiet Book Fabric Kit (Pattern Download included), which, like the title says, includes the full PDF pattern of the "Here Comes Santa Claus" quiet book as well as all the supplies needed to make this Christmas book.

Yankee's Quiet Book

Today's quiet book comes to us from Yankee, and it is so cute.

The front cover has a name sewn onto it, along with a car that has a little pocket. Peppa Pig and her family are finger puppets that fit into the pocket and look like they're driving in the car.

The book opens up to show a car page with several adorable little vehicles, including an ambulance and a fire truck, and several road signs (like a traffic light, stop sign, etc.). Across from the car page is a laundry page with a washing machine, lots of clothes, a clothes line, and socks that velcro off the page.

Next Yankee has a clock page with colorful numbers and moveable hands, and a shoe-tying page where children can practice making a bow.

Next comes one of my favorite pages - Cookie Monster! Cookie Monster's mouth zippers open and you can pull out a lot of cookies, each of which has a different number of chocolate chips sewn on top. These match to numbers on the next page, for children to practice counting and number recognition.

The next page is absolutely adorable, too. It's a nature scene with an apple tree (whose apples you can pick and put in a basket) and several animals to play with - a cow, giraffe, elephant, and lion. Opposite the apple tree page is an alligator (or crocodile) with a bird on his nose and a zipper mouth. Underneath him in the water there are several fish that can velcro off the page and go inside of his mouth.

The last pages in the book are a flower page and a shape page. The flowers can button on and off of their stems and store in the flower pot. The shapes page has ridiculously cute shapes (I love how they're puffy/stuffed) which velcro off and can be matched the their embroidered shapes on the page.

It is an adorable book and looks so fun to play with. Thank you for sharing it with us, Yankee!

Linibau's Quiet Book

Today's quiet book comes to us from Linibau of the blog Trapeando. It is so cute and has some great and unique details. Starting right off, the cover has a flower that, when you lift up the center, you find a picture of the little girl the quiet book was made for. Linibau's book also has a really cute shoe-tying page, a princess dress-up page (with adorable doll, wardrobe, and clothes - I love the little triangle banner!), a tic-tac-toe page, a hair-braiding page, a cookies page that teaches color and shapes, a cupcake baking page, a picnic page (with a picnic basket full of food and a picnic blanket where you can assemble the meal), a counting page with strings of unique, awesome beads (cupcakes, crayons, strawberries, etc.), and an I-Spy page. This book has so many activities and looks so fun. Enjoy!

Marianne's Quiet Books

Today we have two awesome quiet books to show you! These were by Marianne for her two godchildren, and as they were made for children of different ages they each have a different focus. The first is more of a sensory book - complete with flowers, ribbons, and leaves to feel, a little caterpillar to play peekaboo with, and a mirror to see oneself in. The second is made for a preschooler, and is more interactive. This book has buckles, weaving, shapes and colors, snaps, dress-up, and even an awesome little chalkboard complete with real chalk!

Both books are great and really well done. Like Marianne, I think my favorite page is her magnolia tree. The flowers are beautiful! I also really like the fabric that she made the pages out of, especially in the toddler book. Also, I want a cookie page just like hers. But I'm beginning to feel like I'm beginning to feel like I'm rambling, so I'll stop and let Marianne's books speak for themselves. Enjoy!

Interview

What's your name? Describe yourself in one sentence.
My name is Marianne. I love to sew and craft, especially anything that I can give my god-daughters.

Who did you make this quiet book for? How old are they?
Analiese (butterfly book) is 1 month old. Lillie is 4 years (and 1 month) old.

What's your level of sewing experience?
I have been quilting since I was 10 and got my first embroidery machine in college.  I worked at a sewing machine shop for 3 years where I learned A LOT.  On embroidery, I consider myself fairly expert.  On other sewing I consider myself average, I know a lot but can't always execute as beautifully as I would like.

How long did it take you?
Tough question, total probably about 48-60 hours spread over about a month and a half on Sunday afternoons while my husband was watching football. :-)

Did you use any templates? Where can they be found?
I used a template from you for the caterpillar and cocoon page and a template from Imagine Our Life for the cookie page, although in both cases I used the templates to digitize them for my embroidery machine.  Other pages were either free-hand or existing embroidery designs.

How did you bind your quiet book?
I put 2 eyelets in each page and put binder clips through them.  I did this so I can add/change pages as the girls grow and change.

What material are the pages made out of?
The pages are made out of calico cotton with 1 layer of felt inside to give some weight.

What other materials did you use?
Felt for various pages, tulle for the cocoon, satin and ribbons for the taggy flower, cardboard mirror and ribbon, fur and a pre-made cat collar and small dog leash for the cat page, cotton fabric, chalkboard fabric. The daisies, butterflies, and magnolia blooms are freestanding lace so they are made entirely of thread.  I also used buttons, snaps, velcro, small beads in the magnolia blooms, and eyelets (for the binding).  The paper doll was pre-printed cotton and I used fuse 'n' fix to fuse it to felt.  Because I used machine embroidery, I also used 2 different stabilizers.

How much did all the supplies cost you?
Fortunately I had almost everything in my stash.  I had to buy the chalkboard fabric, the mirrored cardboard (both from JoAnns), the buttons (from Michaels), the collar and leash (from the dollar store), and the chalk (from Shopko). Total about $15 (as well as having to purchase the magnolia bloom designs for my machine for about $15 on sale. All other embroideries I either digitized myself or already had on my computer)

What's your favorite page? Why?
DEFINITELY the magnolia tree.  I couldn't be happier with how it turned out.  It also took the most work to put the flowers together.

Marianne, thank you so much for letting us enjoy your lovely quiet books!

Heidi's Quiet Book

Hi everyone! I'm sorry it's been such a long time since I posted a new quiet book; November was a crazy month! I hope your holiday seasons are all going well. :)

Today's quiet book comes to us from Heidi of The Texas Wilcoxsons. Her very cute quiet book was made with a group of friends: ten of them got together, each chose a page they'd like to make, and then made enough copies of that page for everyone. It sounds very efficient and like it could really work for a group of friends that would like to do a project together. I love a lot of the ideas that they used. To list them all, they made: a barn page with farm animal finger puppets, a counting page with a pond and ducks, a cookie monster page with a cookie jar, a car page, a grocery store page with food and a grocery bag, a puzzle page, an ice cream page, a flower counting page, an art pallet colors page, an ocean and fishing page, a Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head page, a seasons tree page, a counting bead page, and a matching socks/laundry page. So take a look at all these cute quiet book pages they put together!

 Interview

What's your name?
Heidi Wilcoxson

Who did you make this quiet book for? How old are they?
My son Caleb, who is 16 months old. I have since had another little boy and I imagine he will also use it.

What's your level of sewing experience?
Virtually none. This was one of the first things I have sewn and probably the second or third time I have used my machine.

How long did it take you?
It took me about 10 hours and it was spread over about three weeks. I actually did mine a little different then most people. I got a group of 10 friends and we each picked a page that we wanted to make. We then made 10 of those pages. Once everyone finished their pages they all sent them to me and I organized and mailed out everyone their 10 pages. It was a little extra work and money just getting all the pages mailed out to everyone but it was really fun because 1. It is pretty easy to make 10 of the same thing and time saving when you only have to make one pattern and 2. It was really fun because everyone did their pages so different and they put their own style on it. I really had a lot of fun getting all the pages and seeing how different everyone did things.

Did you use any templates? Where can they be found?
I didn't use any templates. I looked at a few other blogs and just cut out my own based on their pictures.

What material are the pages made out of?
The pages are made out of felt.

What other materials did you use?
I actually only used felt.

How much did all the supplies cost you?
All the felt was around $20.00

What's your favorite page? Why?
I actually have two favorite pages. The first is the laundry page (I didn't make this one). You take the socks out of the washing machine and then find their match on the corresponding page. I think this page is so much fun and I love all the colors. This page was also really well made so I know it is going to last. My other favorite is the farm page. I think this one is so fun because their are finger puppets and my son loves to put his tiny fingers in these puppets.
