Ramya's No-Sew Quiet Book

Making a quiet book can be intimidating for a lot of people; if you haven't sewed anything before or if you think all the supplies will cost too much, it can be hard to get started. Ramya of the blog Ramya DIY, shows that this needn't be the case though. She created this quiet book with no sewing at all and all the supplies costing her only $7! How she did it was with a hot glue gun, felt, and foam sheets. She has so many cute pages that a child would love to play with. Enjoy!

What's your name? Describe yourself in one sentence. 
My name is Ramya, I am a stay-at-home-mom.

Who did you make this quiet book for? How old are they? 
I made this book for my one year old son.

What's your level of sewing experience? 
Zero.

How long did it take you? 
It took me about 20 hours.

Did you use any templates? Where can they be found? 
No, I have used my own basic drawing skills.

How did you bind your quiet book? 
I used a mini hot glue gun and stuck al the page to the spine of the book cover.

What material are the pages made out of? 
They are made of felt.

What other materials did you use? 
I also used foam sheets alternatively with felt for the design on each page.

How much did all the supplies cost book? 
Including the mini hot glue gun it cost me just around $7.

What's your favorite page? Why? 
I love the outer space pages because I think I got all the elements and color co-ordination correct.

Kelsey's "Mouse in the House" Quiet Book

Kelsey, author of the blog Inspirational Living and a missionary wife and mother living in Cameroon, Africa, has been featured on the Quiet Book Blog before with her awesome quiet book that she made for her nephew. Today I get to share with you her "Mouse in the House" quiet book, one of the cutest quiet books I have ever seen.

This quiet book's main character is a little mouse, and in addition to the things a child can play with on each page, the book has a mystery complete with clues and secret passages. The front cover looks just like a house, and in fact has a door that opens up to the inside page. The pages that it opens up to are the front entrance and living room of the home, with little vinyl windows, curtains, an armchair, framed pictures, tables, flowers, rugs - the details are all so cute and awesome. The next page, though, is my favorite - the kitchen. It rocks. It makes me want to start sewing something like it right now. (Again, you should check out Kelsey's blog post of this quiet book - it has even more pictures of the kitchen!) The last three pages are as cute and fun as the rest of the book, and have cheese, cats, and more secret passageways.

What's your name? Describe yourself in one sentence. 
My name is Kelsey Weber. I am a missionary wife and mother serving in Cameroon, Africa.

Who did you make this quiet book for? How old are they?
I made this quiet book for my 1-year-old daughter, Keturah.

What's your level of sewing experience? 
I have an "intermediate" level of sewing experience.

How long did it take you? 
It took about 16 hours total to make this book. I worked on it for about 1-2 hours a day for 2 weeks.

Did you use any templates? Where can they be found? 
I did not have any templates for this project, but I did browse through Pinterest for some ideas and inspirations.

How did you bind your quiet book? 
Since there aren't many pages to this book I just did a simple whip-stich along the edges of the pages and sewed them together that way.

What material are the pages made out of?
All the pages are made out of felt.

What other materials did you use? 
Other materials incude cotton fabric for the window curtains, buttons for the doornob, thin sheets of clear plastic for the windows, and embroidery thread for all the sewing.

How much did all the supplies cost you?
I made this book with craft supplies I already had on hand, so I'm not sure exactly how much the materials cost, but I would guess about $10.

Winnie's Quiet Book

Today's adorable quiet book comes to us from Winnie of the blog Be A Creative Mom. She hand-sewed the entire thing in just about a week, which is seriously impressive! I love the look that hand-sewing gives quiet books, and I especially love the embroidery that Winnie added to the front and back covers.

In addition to the awesome embroidered covers, Winnie's quiet book has a safari animals page (the animals are hanging on buttons, and can be removed and played with), a purse page (with toys to find inside), a shapes page, a numbers page (which flaps that lift up with objects underneath for children to count), a telephone page (with velcro numbers), a bee and flowers string page, a ribbon page, and an octopus page (with beads on his tentacles to count).

My name is Winnie; I am a mom of 2 living in Singapore.

Who did you make this quiet book for? How old are they? 

I made this book for my one-year-old daughter.

What's your level of sewing experience? How long did it take you?
I consider myself a intermediate sewer, as I hand sew lots of stuff. My speed is actually decent. The book took me about one week to finish while sewing 2 hours a day. So roughly 14-15 hours.

Did you use any templates? Where can they be found? 

I used some from online. I don't remember all of the resources so just listed what I can find as below. Just want to say thank you to all the fantastic moms who posted their templates.

I simply love them all... I worked quite a bit to design and find pages suit my 1 yr old girl. My girl loves the octopus beads page the most.

Dolores's Quiet Book

Today's quiet book was shared with me in unique circumstances. I was contacted by Gerd from South Africa, who had found this quiet book in a charity shop.The last page in the book lists the contact information of a woman named Dolores, who made the book. Gerd was able to get in contact with her family, and found out that Dolores passed away in January of this year, at the age of 95.

According to Dolores's obituary, she "...was born April 22, 1918 in Shelby, Ohio, the daughter of the late Joseph and Gertrude (Tome) Heiland. As a homemaker, Dolores was an excellent baker and cook. Known as the “cake lady,” she baked and decorated thousands of cakes for graduations, birthdays and many other occasions for many area families. She also loved doing crafts and needlepoints and cherished time with her children and grandchildren."

Thank you to all the women who share their love and brighten the lives of their families by sharing their talents with them. I hope you enjoy Dolores's quiet book. :)

Helga's Quiet Book

Today's wonderful quiet book comes from Helga in Switzerland. She has three daughters, who she made a quiet book for when they were children. Now they're older, and have children of their own. Since one quiet book can't easily be shared amongst three families, Helga made two more quiet books for them.

Similar to the printer fabric technique use by Debbie in making her bible quiet book, Helga printed pictures on to transfer paper, which she then transferred to the fabric. Doing so gave her book such a cool look! I love the different details in the book - the dresser, bed, wardrobe, oven - really everything in the whole house. And her granddaughters colored on transfer paper for the cover, which is just so cute. So, please enjoy Helga's quiet book!

What's your name? Describe yourself in one sentence.
My name is Helga. I live in Switzerland; I am a nurse and I am 60 years old.

Who did you make this quiet book for? How old are they?
I made one quiet book 30 years ago for my 3 daughters. Now they have grown up and have only one book to share for their future children. So I now made two others for my twins.

What's your level of sewing experience?
My level of sewing experience is basic. I never sew clothes.

How long did it take you?
The most time I spent on choosing illustrations, colors and some templates. It's hard to say how much time is was, but it is definitely time consuming.

Did you use any templates? Where can they be found?
I used the doll pattern of Sarah Jane. From my kid's, I changed their portrait photos into drawings to use their head with the paper doll body.

How did you bind your quiet book?
I sew the inside pages to the cover.

What material are the pages made out of?
I used cotton fabric.

What other materials did you use?
I used transfer paper to print patterns on fabric.

How much did all the supplies cost you? 
About $50. The most expensive was the transfer paper and the colors of the printer.

What's your favorite page? Why?
The cover made from their drawing (transfer drawing on fabric). It's my favorite because they did it.
